Route 666 Opt-In

This is an opt-in and opt-out post for any of Danse's powers that can affect or control others, or that you just might not want incorporated into a thread for any reason! So far, these include:

Pack Link

Danse has a limited telepathic link with those he sees as packmates, allowing him to project brief thoughts, emotions and sensations at them. By default, this includes people from his own world, but he is gradually bonding with others enough to potentially incorporate them too.

If it's okay for Danse to think of your character as a packmate, and separately, if it's okay for him to mentally project things at them, let me know here!

Heightened Senses

Danse can track/recognize others by scent, and his hearing is sensitive enough to listen in on whispered conversation across a room. If you're generally okay with him being able to do this with your character, let me know, and if not, it's easy to think up situational reasons why he can't.

Commanding Voice

Danse can issue an order that compels another person to follow it. He needs to be putting some oomph into it, so not everything he phrases as a command will work that way, but it's still possible for him to do it accidentally.

I'll always indicate when he's using the power, purposely or otherwise, so if I haven't, and he phrases something as an order, feel free to assume he's just being non-magically rude with no effect. I'll also do some extra OOC confirmation first if I want to throw it into the middle of a thread, but using it on another character is the kind of rare thing I'd want to plot out beforehand anyway.

Please let me know here if you're okay with him using this!

for taediosum

[ Disgusting, he'd called those patches of temporary scales growing through the injuries on his own face and arms, that first day here. It had been the very first experience he'd had with any kind of transformation, back when his arms still had a relatively ordinary amount of hair on them, and his face hadn't needed to be shaved twice a day to keep his beard in check, to say nothing of the ears and the tail and the fangs and the way everything has an impossibly vivid scent now and all the rest of it besides. Maybe it was just the unexpectedness of the scales. Maybe it was the bright copperhead color, seeming garish to him even when he wasn't objecting to it on his truck or his uniform.

He doesn't know. He can't logically account for why he'd thought those ones were ugly, whereas the ones on Arcade now are...elegant, is the word that periodically comes to mind. Like marble, he's caught himself thinking; like the kind of ancient statue that seems of a piece with the Latin he quotes. But Danse tries not to think much about any of that. What good does it do him?

There's a grace to both the scales and the extra arms they cover, and those are another thing he has to deliberately stop himself from thinking about sometimes, or watching as they move, mesmerizing in the way they maneuver together. He tells himself he's just impressed by the efficiency of having twice as many arms for necessary tasks. He doesn't even believe himself. But it doesn't matter. Things are still so newly and tentatively civil between them these days, and it would be downright irresponsible to let something as frivolous as this make it weird again. If there's one thing Danse knows how to do when he tries, it's force any and all physical desire down into a lead-lined little box and keep things professional.

There's plenty to keep him occupied anyway, as they move north into ever-colder territory. Even were he not sporting an amount of insulating fur now that feels just barely within the realm of still human (or human-adjacent), this is just the kind of autumnal cold it gets in the Commonwealth. A Commonwealth fall might as well be a Capital winter, but he's roughed it outdoors through both of those for deep recon ops and come out the other side only mildly frostbitten for the wear, and he can chop wood and forage food and build campfires with the best of them. He's perfectly in his element. He'd still been cheerfully sleeping out in his truck bed until a few days ago, stealing an extra blanket from the sleeping car and carrying on as usual. He knows not everyone's built for cold weather; he's heard complaints already, but it hasn't yet occurred to him how literally true that might be.

Still, it seems like a good idea to go chop some extra firewood just in case, to have around the camp. The woods here are absolutely brimming with mushrooms and berries and edible roots and things that would be a luxury to find un-mutated and minimally-irradiated back home, and he considers trying to gather some of those too as long as he's out, but he decides it'll depend on whether the frost he can smell in the air turns into snow. ]

Canon: Fallout 4
Canon Point: About three weeks after the resolution of the quest "Blind Betrayal"
Age: Chronologically 20; looks and acts closer to 40

Backstory: Wiki
Personality:

Danse is a man who has spent almost his entire life under the thumb of a cult he doesn't yet recognize as a cult, and his loyalty to that cult even when exiled from it on pain of death illustrates just how built for duty and devotion he really is.

Despite his lingering allegiance to the Brotherhood of Steel, though, and the cognitive dissonance necessary to maintain it even when they want him (and other non-humans) dead, he possesses a measure of empathy and gentleness that the organization doesn't encourage in its members, and it's evident that there are some ways in which he's adapted his own mental image of the Brotherhood to fit more idealistic protect-and-serve values rather than accept the organization as it truly is. He disdains the previous leadership for being "unfocused and overly charitable," believing that said lack of focus made the Brotherhood less effective at its mission, but he's still the first one to argue on an individual level for generosity toward wastelanders in need, to insist that the Brotherhood needs to "start behaving like we care," and to berate his subordinates for gratuitous rudeness or cruelty.

He values decorum, careful discipline and steady temper, and while he can often be stern and sharp to get a point across, or irritable when he feels his advice is going unheeded, and his general demeanor can best be described as "gruff" or "brusque," he almost never gets angry to the point of losing control. He's developed a lot of ways to stay cool under pressure, and whenever anything threatens that, he'll either remove himself from the situation or demand that the offender walk away before anything can escalate. He soaks up taunts and insults with little offense or acknowledgement, taking most verbal animosity toward him in stride unless it hits too close to home--and even when it does, the worst he'll do is yell about it.

More than one of his acquaintances, upon learning that he's an android, claim not to be surprised by the revelation because "I mean, I've heard him speak" and "that dude shows about as much emotion as a bag of hammers." The exception to this is in the heat of battle, where he can be outright terrifying, channeling all of his pent-up aggression into near-feral bloodlust when given a hostile target to unload a weapon at.

He would say, not inaccurately, that he's motivated by a sense of honor and duty and protectiveness toward humanity as a whole, whether or not he's still counted as part of it. He likes to wax loftily poetic about the greater good, and about grandiose ideas of a distant future where humankind can rebuild in safety with protection from its own self-destructive impulses. He would also say, less accurately, that he'd make any sacrifices necessary, including his own life, to make that happen. He will die willingly for the Brotherhood's cause in a moment of despair, if allowed to, even going so far as to take his own life if the player doesn't do it for him or talk him down--but self-preservation and pride are still far more motivating for him than he wants to admit, because when faced with the prospect of execution for being a synth, he reflexively runs away rather than accept his fate, and it doesn't take much at all to convince him to live and keep fighting.

The way he processes this in the aftermath comes as a surprise to him, because he wouldn't have believed himself capable of wanting to live without everything that once mattered to him, or thought he could ever find himself facing the loss of something as intrinsic as his own (assumed) humanity, and yet he finds it easier than expected to pick himself up and keep going. After a few initial, despairing meltdowns full of tearful self-loathing, he deals with his trauma mostly by latching onto the few friends he has and trying to make himself as indispensably useful to them as he can, wanting to be purposeful rather than let himself wallow in misery. (Self-blame and self-doubt are characteristic responses to traumatic situations for him, but he tries to bottle these up to keep them from interfering with his work.) He can be outright clingy in his devotion toward the people who still support him, leaning on his relationships as a slightly unhealthy substitute for a sense of self, but he's reasonably aware of the fact that he's doing that.

In essence, Danse is someone who truly doesn't even know who he is once free to indulge things like kindness and romance and intellectual curiosity for the first time, but these are still parts of himself that he does want to explore. Despite the way he still wants to cling for safety to the indoctrination that has defined his life, a part of him is already beginning to realize that being something other than human can be freeing as well as frightening.

Powers/Abilities:

Danse is a mostly-organic android who's really more just differently-human than superhuman, but since the aim in creating his type of android was ultimately to improve on humanity, the few differences do give him a slight edge.

1. Synth biology: Compared to a human, Danse's stamina and immune response are slightly enhanced. He can't alter his pre-designed body type by gaining or losing weight or muscle, and according to the scientists who created him, his model of synth doesn't need food or sleep--though he'll still feel starving and exhausted if he tries to go without them, to almost the same degree that any human would.

2. Combat training: Danse has spent the past fifteen years in a strict, elite military environment, working his way up to a high-ranking command position. While the fighting style he's most accustomed to requires power armor that he won't have, he's very experienced with a laser rifle, serviceable with an ordinary assault rifle in a pinch, and well trained in hand-to-hand combat.

3. Survival: While Danse is accustomed to serving in a well-equipped stronghold and having more resources at his disposal than the average wastelander, he's often assigned to command recon squads for long-term missions into uncharted territory, where he and his team need to survive on what they can scavenge. He's competent at hunting/foraging for food, finding shelter in the wilderness, and performing basic field medicine when absolutely necessary.

Inventory: One Brotherhood-issue laser rifle; two extra clips of fusion-cell ammo for it; one set of unmarked olive-green mechanic's coveralls a size too small for him; one pair of Brotherhood-issue uniform boots.

Game Plans: I love the idea of exploring the monster transformation aspect when he's already coming to terms with not being human--whether he'll have an easier time or a harder time with it, and whether he might in turn eventually find it easier to support others through it because he's already been there in more than one way.

And of course, there's the fact that this is a nicer apocalyptic wasteland than the one back home, so I just like the idea of him being in his element to some degree and being able to use his existing skills to help out the convoy.

Monster Choice: In order of preference:

1. Zoanthrope - Werewolf -- It's a raw and especially animalistic option for a man who thinks of himself as a carefully disciplined machine and often disdainfully compares groups like raiders and bandits to "wild dogs," but at the same time, the idea of the pack bond offers a way for him to feel a sense of family that he's always desperately craved but never really had, even in the Brotherhood.

2. Celestial - Angel -- This would be a good way to lean into the more austere, dutiful, carefully-ordered side of his personality rather than contrast it. He already has a strong desire to guard and protect those he sees as vulnerable--which is most people, compared to him--and he can already go overboard with it where it isn't wanted, so making it a compulsion wouldn't be a stretch. He's also slightly afraid of the dark and likes to shoot laser beams as a combat tactic, so really, he's halfway there.

3. Elemental - Earth -- Ideally with sort of a focus on the metal/oil aspects of earth, if possible, to play into the strong steel/machinery motifs of his character. The idea of him basking in dirt or mud is funny as well, considering how many mods exist just to wash the layer of soot off his face.

Vehicle Choice: A burnt-orange pickup truck with the Tough quality.

History: Wiki

Personality:

Dutiful

"I need to be the example, not the exception."

The rose-colored glasses with which Danse views the Brotherhood of Steel could be cited as further evidence of delusion or brainwashing (see below), rather than commitment to duty. There certainly is an element of that in the way he consistently sees the organization as it claims to be, and as it should be, rather than as it actually is.

But his devotion to that ideal stems from his wholehearted belief that nobody but the Brotherhood can possibly protect what's left of humankind from extinction. Convinced though he is that everyone would believe in the Brotherhood's cause if they weren't "blinded by rumors and misinformation," he still swears that he would gladly spill his own blood to defend the civilians who don't appreciate it or want him there.

When he discovers that he is one of the "technology run amok" creations he's previously insisted are the biggest threat to humanity, he begs the Sole Survivor to kill him or allow him to kill himself rather than let him continue to exist as part of that threat. He refuses to accept that he or anyone else deserves special treatment or to be elevated above the rules, and hates few things more than hypocrisy.

Brainwashed

"I might have been exiled from the Brotherhood, but I'll be damned if I'm going to stand idly by while you tarnish its name."

Some players think it's a bug or an oversight that even after Danse is kicked out of the Brotherhood on pain of death and forced to spend the rest of his life fleeing from the members hunting him down for sport, his voice lines in praise of it don't change. It's not a bug. Danse is capable of massive cognitive dissonance when justifying his continued faith in the organization that wants him dead, even when he's been convinced that he deserves to live. The fact that he requires such thorough persuading of this in the first place is proof of the hold the Brotherhood's philosophy still has on him, and to some extent always will.

He needs repeated convincing that his mere existence as a synth isn't inherently harming anyone, and that he deserves to maintain relationships with human beings in the same way he's done all his life, always prefacing his doubts about that with "After everything the Brotherhood taught you..." or "The Brotherhood would say that..." or "You're betraying what the Brotherhood stands for." He still can't bring himself to believe that other synths deserve the same grace that he was given, or that they count as people too, because he only barely and precariously believes it of himself. He never does change his mind about the Railroad needing to be destroyed, despite the fact that he almost certainly owes his own freedom to it.

He has a habit of imprinting on specific people when he doesn't have a larger group or philosophy to devote his loyalty to, but whether this is because of Institute programming or Brotherhood brainwashing or just simply who he is as a person is up in the air. Either way, it's clear to see why he's been such a useful weapon to those who want to use him as one.

Bigoted

"I can't believe you're replacing me with this...thing."

By a number of standards, Danse is refreshingly egalitarian. He's more than happy to serve alongside or take orders from soldiers of any ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. His open and seething prejudice is not the sort that might apply to anyone from a mundane Earth setting, and half of it is internalized and applies just as strongly to himself as to those he hates--but in the world he comes from, it's no wonder that nobody actually likes him outside of the domineering and widely-resented organization he represents.

He's been taught to separate his post-apocalyptic society into "human" and "subhuman," and anyone in the "subhuman" category--usually those mutated by radiation or the Forced Evolutionary Virus, but the philosophy applies as well to synths for being lab-created rather than born--poses a threat to be wiped out. His reasoning is that these groups result from unchecked use of the kind of dangerous technology the Brotherhood exists to control, and he's not actually wrong about this, but it leads him and the rest of the Brotherhood to take it cruelly out on innocent people who find themselves the victims or pawns of that technology through no fault of their own, as well as on the ones who do pose actual threats.

Danse has been known to feel empathy and make exceptions for radiation-mutated ghouls who show no signs of harming anyone, but he's inconsistent with it, and seems to feel guilty enough about those exceptions to double down and be even more needlessly unkind to other ghouls as if making up for it.

Codependent

"Being with you has made me realize that I never want to be alone again."

Given how wholly his identity was wrapped up in the Brotherhood and the notion that he was defending his fellow humans from outside attack, it isn't a surprise that Danse feels completely hollowed-out and bereft of any purpose in life once he loses all of that at once. He's self-aware enough to be able to articulate this, and to reject a less-charismatic Sole Survivor's romantic advances by explaining that he's in no position to engage in a healthy relationship until he figures out who he is on his own without all the things that once mattered to him.

If he is persuaded to enter a relationship, however, he becomes desperately devoted (and the direction notes to the voice actor do use the word "desperate") to the point where he's terrified to let his partner out of his sight lest anything hurt them while he can't protect them, says he doesn't know what he'd do without them, waxes feverishly poetic about how fate brought them together and would never tear them apart, and claims this is the only time in his life that he's ever known real happiness. He seems hyper-aware of any slight changes in the player's attitude toward him and worriedly blames himself for any shifts in approval.

While not too extreme or dangerous, it's evident that he's leaning on the relationship as a substitute for a sense of self in a way that isn't healthy or well-adjusted, and would probably do that with just about anyone who stepped into that vacuum at the right time.

Powers and Abilities: Danse can't really do things that a human soldier can't, but he can endure a lot more than the average human.

His stamina and immune response are moderately enhanced and he can heal more quickly from injuries, but his synth biology is most notable in the fact that he literally can't alter his body type in any significant way no matter what he does. He doesn't age and can't gain or lose weight or muscle; he's designed to stay exactly how he came out of the lab, unless he loses a limb or something. He doesn't need to sleep, though he can still feel tired and choose to do it; similarly, he can survive on very little caloric input, but he'll still feel like he's starving if he doesn't eat.

Inventory: One Brotherhood-issue laser rifle, one extra clip of fusion-cell ammo for it, and one set of holographic dog tags.

Character Base

• Character Name: Paladin Danse
• Age: Indeterminate; appears to be in his 30s, but was probably created around 20 years prior to his canon point
• Canon/Canon Point: Fallout 4 (2015) / shortly after the quest "Blind Betrayal"
• Items Coming Along:

-- One laser rifle, running low on ammo.
-- One orange-and-tan flight suit, without hood.
-- One suit of X-01 power armor, with a single partially-depleted fusion core.

Content Warnings for Character: Open bigotry toward sentient non-humans, particularly undead and androids/robots/other synthetic humanoids. (The latter is internalized bigotry, as he is himself a synth.)

Character Background

• History: Wiki link here.
• Core Relationships:

Arthur Maxson

Leader of the East Coast Brotherhood of Steel for the past five years, despite being only twenty years old. Danse's long career with the Brotherhood means that he's known Maxson since the man was a child, felt protective and proud of him in the manner one might feel about a younger cousin, been allowed to give Maxson counsel and remain on a first-name basis with him when other paladins can't--and therefore been all the more blindsided by the whiplash-inducing speed with which Maxson was willing to order his execution.

Scribe Haylen

The medic/techie/all-purpose nerd of Recon Squad Gladius, the ill-fated group Danse commanded on the Brotherhood's third expedition into the Commonwealth. She's saved Danse's life more times than he can count on one hand, and he praises her both to her face and to everyone else he trains as the platonic ideal of what a Brotherhood scribe should be. He is completely and utterly oblivious to her feelings for him, and somehow even more oblivious to whatever he might feel for her in return.

Knight Cutler

Cutler is a posthumous character, existing now only in the story Danse tells to explain why he doesn't like to get close to people. He was Danse's best friend before they joined the Brotherhood together, and the two of them were positively joined at the hip until Danse was promoted to paladin and Cutler wasn't. This in and of itself would not have made much of a dent in their friendship, except for the fact that once they no longer had each other for protection, Cutler was kidnapped by super mutants and subjected to such hideous experimentation and torture that Danse was forced to mercy-kill him. And that's why Danse will only address you as "soldier" and looks at you like a deer in headlights whenever you're nice to him. Good talk.

[Note: I have not included the game's malleable protagonist as a core relationship, since I am apping Danse from a worldstate where the Sole Survivor chose not to join the Brotherhood of Steel and therefore disappeared from Danse's life after their first meeting.

In this worldstate, the Brotherhood has managed to acquire data from the Institute on its own--possibly by strongarming the Minutemen into sharing what the Sole Survivor gathered--and Danse has only survived the events of Blind Betrayal because the patrol sent to hunt him down has not yet managed to find him. By extension, neither has Maxson, and therefore their final conversation has not taken place, since it requires the protagonist's intercession to keep Maxson from killing Danse. However, if anyone ever decides to app in a Sole Survivor, I'm happy to retcon and work with them.]

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Joining the Brotherhood of Steel

Danse would cite this as the most positive and important moment of his life, even after it all ended in flames and tears and "shoot to kill" orders. His entire value system and sense of morality is inextricably bound up in what the Brotherhood taught him, and even if he has been persuaded to let himself be an exception to those teachings--a feat which does take some persuasion, because when he initially discovers himself to be a synth, he's all too willing and ready to let his pursuer execute him so that he can aid the Brotherhood even in death--he remains loyal enough to their cause that he can only bring himself to oppose them in imminent self-defense. The most he ever manages to deviate from this is when he mutters about Maxson not liking to do his own dirty work, or when he will conflictedly, confusedly approve of mild statements about synths maybe possibly sort of being actual people. Ish.

He has entertained the idea, in particularly dark moments, that perhaps he was designed to want a greater purpose and specifically programmed for this kind of loyalty, except that it was supposed to be to the Institute. He always tries to push that train of thought as far away as possible when it encroaches.

Interactions with Ghouls

The Brotherhood holds that ghouls are subhuman filth, even the ones who are still perfectly lucid and friendly and would be better sources than just about anything else for valuable pre-war knowledge and insight. Danse, loyal paladin that he is, agrees with this wholeheartedly.

Except when you run into a little ghoul boy trapped in a fridge and searching for his parents. Then Danse will fairly turn on you with disgust that you would even think about leaving this innocent child--whom he addresses kindly as "son"--alone and unaided. Deplorable, soldier.

Or when you encounter a settlement of ghouls who have turned an old swimming resort into a cranberry bog, seeking to be entrepreneurial and helpful to society in the hopes of combating anti-ghoul prejudice. Then Danse just has to compliment them on their clever use of architecture and wish them well. Ingenuity ought to be praised, right? Right? Of course.

Or when the sad, lonely ghoul nerd running the equivalent of a comic podcast enlists you to clear the streets of crime while dressed as his favorite superhero. Danse thinks he's just trying to make the world a better place, in his own way. Shouldn't he be credited for that? Never mind, of course, that Danse thinks comic books are "ludicrous" and will complain about their stupidity to anyone else. When Kent the Ghoul wants you to put on a silly voice and fight badguys, Danse won't have a negative word to say.

It seems, at times, like the only reason he's so overtly cruel to Hancock is because the man's drug addiction and unapologetically in-your-face attitude make him one of the few sentient ghouls Danse can bring himself to treat the way he feels he's supposed to.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Cutler's Death

Though Danse maintains to this day that he has no regrets about following Brotherhood orders, he never sounds less sure about this than when he talks about killing Cutler for having been transformed into a super mutant. He will frame it in terms of protocol, duty, order, insist repeatedly that he had no choice--anything he can say to avoid the gnawing doubts that it was really the right thing to do. His uncertainty is clear, even though this conversation takes place well before he discovers that he's a synth, and therefore he lacks that incentive to question the Brotherhood's beliefs. Never at any point does he talk about what Cutler actually wanted, only what Brotherhood teachings demanded, and the omission speaks volumes.

He feels guilty and terrified that he might only have been projecting what he himself would have wanted in that situation. And now, having actually been in a similar one, he's not even so sure it's what he would have wanted either. Gameplay-wise, one of the stronger negative reactions the protagonist can elicit from Danse is by curing a super mutant scientist of his condition with an experimental serum. Part of this is likely because the scientist is responsible for the existence of the mutants in the first place, and Danse feels that the redemption is undeserved, but beyond that, it's just all the more cause to fear that he murdered his best friend for no reason.

Confronting Maxson

Though this confrontation has not taken place at the canon point Danse is being brought from, it illustrates the conditions that are necessary for him to finally snap and disengage himself from Brotherhood prejudices. Maxson's viciousness in calling for Danse's death ultimately becomes a benefit to Danse, jolting him sharply out of his suicidal self-loathing at the discovery that he is what he's been trying to fight.

Hearing the man he's known for a decade, sung the praises of and supported through thick and thin refer to him as "it," and insist that he can't possibly have a mind or soul of his own, when just days ago he'd been asking Danse's advice and confiding in him as a friend, is too blatant a display of cognitive dissonance to let slide. For the first time, Danse challenges Maxson--in front of a subordinate, no less--and calls him out on his hypocrisy. "After all I've done for the Brotherhood, all the blood I've spilled in our name," he demands, "how can you say that about me?" It's a stark contrast between his defense of himself to Maxson's face and his earlier attempt to persuade the Sole Survivor to kill him. Going forward from this point, he's more willing to think of himself as deserving of human rights, even if he no longer calls himself human.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Moderately enhanced endurance and healing factor compared to the average human, though the Institute's claim that his model of synth is immune to all toxins and needs no food or sleep is exaggerated.
• Blood Type: Vileblood, both because I would like to make him a Hunter and explore its usefulness and drawbacks in that capacity, and because I feel like the stigma against it might replicate some of the prejudices of his own world in a way that could help him work through his beliefs about himself.

The prejudice against vilebloods, particularly the idea of them being a sort of ticking time bomb of beasthood, is probably more analogous to the way ghouls are treated in the world of Fallout, but it's also a belief commonly held about synths ever since an infamous case in which a synth infiltrator malfunctioned and went on a lethal rampage in a city square. Either way, it's a comparison that has the potential to make Danse think really hard about a lot of things.

• Omen: Gray tabby cat, with a strong resemblance to the shipboard cat of the Prydwen
• Blessed Day: October 17, which I have decided is his "birthday"/date of creation, because a lot of significant canon events happen in October.
• Patron Pthumerian: Cloverfield, whose robotic aspects will make him uncomfortable, but his protective instinct toward children and childlike things will probably override that.
• Blood Power Manifestation: Total nerf of canon powers, since sleeper blood does all of those things better anyway.

Permissions and Quick Info

⇓nutshell⇓

A somewhat brainwashed but well-intentioned soldier from the post-apocalyptic ruins of Boston, dealing with the recent revelation that he's the same kind of android (or "synth") that his cultlike paramilitary organization has sworn to eradicate. Underneath his gruff martial exterior, he's earnestly romantic.

⇓at a glance⇓

AGE: Hard to say, and he doesn't actually know, having been created full-grown in a lab and then mindwiped. Appears to be somewhere in his late thirties. Is probably, chronologically speaking, closer to twenty.

HEIGHT: 6'2", outside of his power armor.

BUILD: Absolute brick shithouse.

HAIR: Straight, black, voluminous, and usually swept back in a modest pompadour.

EYES: Clear medium brown with a hint of hazel.

VOICE: A deep, rumbling baritone, pleasant when he's speaking quietly but harsh and strident when he shouts.

DEMEANOR: Extremely military at all times, without exception. Battle cries are his pillow talk. Literally. Ad victoriam, baby.

⇓in character⇓

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: He'll allow it, and possibly even gingerly return it if he likes you and/or you seem emotionally fragile. If he really doesn't like you, you'll get a stern warning first and a rifle butt to the stomach thereafter.

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Anything short of causing permanent disfigurement is fine. He's very well-trained in combat and he loves a fight.

ROMANCE/FLIRTING: Flirting from anyone is fine! He's likely to be bewildered and awkward about it, but may be more bluntly unwelcoming if your character is visibly non-human.

SEXUAL CONTENT: Open to it with men and women 21+, though smut may take some CR development or assumed CR first.

PSYCHIC ABILITIES: I'm cool with having them used on him, but he will be angry about it.

Depending on the nature of a character's psychic abilities, they may be able to detect the synth component in his brain, which makes him vulnerable to being "factory reset" by those who know a certain code phrase.

MAGIC/POWERS: Also fine with having these used on him. They'll freak him the hell out.

OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS OR TRIGGERS:

He's a little touchy about jokes or teasing about his synthetic nature--he's fine calling himself a machine as a sort of coping mechanism, but if anyone else does, it's going to hurt his feelings. However, this is something he can come to be okay with and eventually find funny, because humor about it helps him process it.

Despite his canonical PTSD diagnosis, he doesn't really have triggers that need to be avoided in threads.

SHIPPING: I'd love to toss ideas around with any other Fallout characters, companion or protagonist, and anyone from a similar post-apocalypse genre, in particular.

For crosscanon on memes, if you'd rather not AU your character into the Falloutverse and I don't know enough to AU Danse into yours, I'm always happy to assume a generic jamjar game setting or an isekai situation.

I love to ship him with nerds, because he has such a habit of gushing about the scholars and historians he works with, but he'll be a little warier of hard STEM types given his background and thoughts on the type of mad science that created him--though that wariness can be the start of a good ship dynamic in and of itself.

Fellow military types are also A+, and the only dynamic I envision having trouble with is the extremely anti-authoritarian type who would challenge all of his deeply held beliefs right off the bat.

⇓out of character⇓

BACKTAGGING: Yes

FOURTH WALLING: No

THREADHOPPING: Yes

CROSS-MEDIUM: Yes, but prefer to keep things generally matched in tone--Fallout is on the sillier side as post-apocalyptic canons go, but I'd rather a thread lean more serious than more wacky or fluffy unless it's a crack prompt
