HISTORY
ESCAPE FROM THE INSTITUTE
Danse was created on an assembly line in an underground laboratory, by the descendants of MIT faculty who had retreated there during the nuclear war two centuries prior. The scientists of the Institute maintained that their free-willed creations ("synths") were mere machines, existing for the purpose of doing their bidding and owing them gratitude for it.

Some of these synths managed to escape with the aid of an organization called the Railroad, which would smuggle them to safety and reprogram their minds with false backstories to help them blend in and pass for human. Danse would not think of this as a formative experience, because his memories of it were permanently erased and he used his newfound freedom to join an organization that wanted the Railroad utterly destroyed, but it was the necessary foundational event for him to become the person he is at all, rather than remaining the enslaved labor android M7-97.
JOINING THE BROTHERHOOD
Danse's Railroad-programmed backstory made him a junkyard-dwelling orphan who aspired to open his own market stand to sell scrap. For a time, he did exactly this, along with his best and only friend Cutler.

When the Brotherhood of Steel, a vast and cultlike paramilitary organization with roots in the pre-apocalypse US Army, came through their town to recruit, Danse and Cutler joined up together "because it seemed like a way out of our nowhere lives." Danse took to his new military career as if born for it, and rapidly rose through the ranks with the mentorship of a commander who had singled him out as destined for greatness.
'PUT HIM DOWN'
The Brotherhood's attempts to establish stability in the former Washington, D.C. area were being thwarted by "super mutants," people who had been transformed by a virus into violent behemoths who wanted to eat or assimilate any humans they caught. Cutler and his squad were captured by them, and while the rest of the squad was killed, Cutler was forcibly transformed into a mutant himself.

When Danse found him, after three weeks of desperate searching, Brotherhood protocol held that it was his duty to kill him--and so Danse did. Even years after the fact, despite his wholehearted belief in all other aspects of Brotherhood philosophy, he agonizes over whether he was right to do it.
RECON SQUAD GLADIUS
When the Brotherhood decided to expand its reach to other locations on the Eastern seaboard, they sent three recon teams in total to the Boston area: a first, which came back with valuable pre-war information and technology; a second, which was lost and presumed dead; and a third, commanded by Danse, in the hopes of emulating the first and finding the second.

Over the course of the next ten months, over half of Danse's men were killed by attacks from raiders, super mutants and zombie-like ghouls, leaving just him and the final two survivors under siege in an abandoned police station until someone happened upon them and helped. Danse blames himself fully for his squad's death and has been formally diagnosed with PTSD as a result of the ill-fated expedition.
BLIND BETRAYAL
When the Institute was finally infiltrated and information from its databases passed on to the Brotherhood, part of the data included a list of runaway synths--featuring a picture of Danse and a DNA sample to leave no doubt. Upon hearing of this, Danse panicked and fled his post, while the Elder of the Brotherhood charged Danse's own protege with hunting him down and executing him.

Danse urged her to obey her orders, for the good of the Brotherhood and for humanity as a whole, as there was no greater threat to the Brotherhood's policies of human supremacy and technological control than free-thinking androids being allowed to run amok, but she refused, persuading him that he had the right to live and to continue doing good in the world. The Elder, suspecting that her loyalty might be in question, had followed her to ensure the deed was done, and threatened to execute Danse himself if she wouldn't, but she succeeded in swaying him to commute Danse's sentence to exile.

Danse was allowed to live, but informed that the rest of the Brotherhood would be told that he died as a traitor, and that if he ever attempted to enter their territory or speak to any of them again, he would be immediately shot.

ABILITIES
SYNTH BIOLOGY Compared to a human, Danse's stamina and immune response are slightly enhanced. He can't alter his pre-designed body type by gaining or losing weight or muscle, and according to the scientists who created him, his model of synth doesn't need food or sleep--though he'll still feel starving and exhausted if he tries to go without them, to almost the same degree that any human would. He was created as an adult and does not physically age.

MONSTER
appearance
Danse's monster form is sleeker than might be expected for a man who would prefer to spend all of his time in a bulky half-ton mech suit if he could, an adaptation that reminds him of his inherently dangerous-to-humankind nature by giving him all he needs to be a killing machine without changing much in size.

His height increases to around seven feet and weight to around three hundred pounds, on digitigrade legs designed for movement on all fours. His existing body hair lengthens into a dense black pelt, his nose and brow ridges thicken with protective bone, his ears take on a lupine size and shape, and he develops a long black plume of a tail for balance.

While other wolf eyes might also be expected to glow yellow, Danse's irises take on a particularly robotic shape with a notch in them that evokes a power-on button, exactly like an earlier model of synth. His claws and fangs are of weathered but razor-sharp steel rather than bone.

POWER LIST
Heightened Senses Bloodhound-accurate senses of smell and hearing.
Recruitment While the moon is out, Danse's bite can inflict temporary changes that mirror his, physically and behaviorally.
Show of Force The more blood Danse consumes, the longer his fangs and claws grow and the more he craves.

behavior
His two greatest fears--harming his loved ones, and humanity being replaced with his kind--manifest in his bite, which can temporarily confer his own lycanthropic curse onto the victim, making them resemble his form and share his compulsions.

Though he openly disdains blood sport and insists that humanity should hold itself to a higher standard, he already has an existing tendency to become near-feral when given an acceptable target to unleash his pent-up aggression on. The more blood the wolf tastes, the longer and thicker his fangs and claws grow and the more of it he feels compelled to hunt down and consume, sabotaging his own desire for pack by greedily tearing to shreds anyone he might have assimilated. Gorged on enough blood and flesh, the lower fangs could theoretically pierce his own eyes.

The wolf feels generally compelled to explore, invade and mark dangerous territory, heedlessly endangering itself in pursuit of conquest. Closer to home, he craves selfish, needy, clingy, possessive sex. His partners will be knotted to keep them from disengaging, and he will want to mark them with wounds and scent.
